IP seminars at the LSE

The IPKat commends the LSE's LLM IP Specialist Seminars, open to the public for no charge. All take place at the LSE's Central London campus.

The next talk is at 1pm on 5 December, when Professor Justin Hughes from Cardozo Law School in New York will speak on 'Copyright Liability on the Internet in Three Acts'.

Coming up in the new year are Pierre Valentin (Withers) on 'Who Decides What Is Art?' and Professor Sonia Kaytal on 'Contrabrand: Art, Advertising and Corporate identity'.

Birmingham IP Seminar next week

IPKat reader and fellow Nottingham-based IP lawyer Nick McDonald contacted IPKat member David to let him know of a seminar Browne Jacobson are running on Tuesday 25 November 2008 at their Birmingham office. Normally, of course, this would be put on the IPKat's colourful and informative sidebar with all the other upcoming events but an exception is being made this time, given the short notice.  

The seminar will be covering a variety of topics, and will include an presentation by the UK-IPO Deputy Director Julyan Elbro on the recent decision in Symbian and what (if any) effect this is having on patentability of computer programs in the UK.  Members of Browne Jacobson will also be providing their views on the recent spat over standards involving Nokia and how to cope with online infringment.  The full list of topics to be covered is:

• To what extent are computer programs patentable? The UK approach in relation to software patentability and excluded matter, with guest speaker Julyan Elbro, Deputy Director, UK Intellectual Property Office
• Standard related patent litigation and the role of negative declarations post Nokia v InterDigital and Nokia v Qualcomm - Mark Daniels
• Stemming the tide of online infringement: Auctions, ISP's and search engines - Declan Cushley, Richard Nicholas and Nick McDonald
